Home of the Budweiser Angus:
Our Emulous story starts in 1934 at Pleasant Plains, Illinois. It was a drouth and depression year. Water, feed and money were scarce. Three men from Oklahoma were visiting J. Garrett Tolan Farms-Charles Bates, veteran Angus breeder from Ada; the young college man who was showing his cattle that year, Lee Leachman; and a young rancher getting a solid start with Angus, Carlton Corbin of Fittstown. Earlier the master breeder, Garrett Tolan, had bought a small herd of Angus from August Busch of brewing fame to get 12 daughters of a 10-year old bull named Emulous of Sangamon. Bred at St. Albans Farms at Pacific, Missouri, old "Emulous" was considered "a rib long" for his time. Due to his advanced age and the wear and tear under natural breeding conditions he was destined for the stockyards. Carlton Corbin liked the old bull's calves and agreed to pay the Illinois breeder market price for him-7 cents a pound. Even though he was old, long and gaunt, Emulous of Sangamon weighed nearly 1,800 pounds and cost the Oklahoman just under $125.00. With his transfer, and transportation, he cost around $150.
Emulous of Sangamon was a good deal for both the buyer and seller. For the seller one of his daughters, Sangamon Evergreen 3, became the dam of one of the fabulous producing females of the breed, Evergreen T. For Carlton Corbin, with only a small herd of cattle, old "Emulous" sired two calf crops and left 29 sons and daughters when he died at 12. But they were destined to make Angus history.
